Doing the Impossible with God and Keeping Focused

A few days ago the words “keep focus” came to my spirit.  Instantly I thought about the story of Jesus and Peter walking on water.  A logically impossible task.  However, I do not want to focus on Jesus doing the impossible, but rather what became possible when Peter focused on Jesus.

Doing the Impossible with God: The Story of Jesus and Peter

You heard the story before, but for those that have not let me paint the picture for you.  Matthew 14:22-33 tells the story of Jesus and his disciples finding themselves on a ship in the mist of the sea.  Strong waves and heavy winds rocked the ship but something interesting happened.  Jesus did not rebuke the sea this time as he did in Mark 4:39. He thought to do something unusual.  Something most people would never dare to do.  Jesus got off the ship and stepped onto the waves.  Now, stop for a moment and imagine that.  You are in the middle of the sea.  It is a rocky ride.  All of a sudden you see someone stepping off the ship. Sounds crazy right?  As you can imagine, his disciples were in fear and terror.  However, Jesus encouraged them to be of good cheer and to not fear.
Nonetheless, there was someone just as daring and radical as Jesus on the ship.  Peter.  Peter asked the Lord to bid him to come onto the water.  Again, an impossible task but Jesus said one word, “come.”  The scripture records Peter coming off the ship and doing the impossible.  As he walked towards Jesus, he walked on water!
I want to pause right here.  What waves are you waiting on God to calm?  What challenging assignment has God given you?  What impossible thing are you believing God for?  I want to challenge you to have tunnel vision and focus on God.
So the question becomes, how does one focus on God when confronted with the elements and cares of life?  We find the answer in scripture.  After Peter stepped off the ship he began to walk on water.  He was doing what others feared, but his faith propelled him.  For as long as Peter was focused on Jesus, Peter was able to do the illogical and the impossible.  However, once he saw the boisterous winds his focus shift to the elements around him and he began to sink.
To do the impossible and keep focused on God, you must:

Have a Prayer Life

The first thing Peter does before stepping off the ship is ask God to bid him to come.  He realized that before he can do the supernatural, he must first communicate his request to God.  Peter reapped the benefit of having Jesus in front of him, so he did not have to pray.  However, we reap the same benefit through prayer.
Whether you are seeking to eliminate distractions or believing God for the impossible, you must develop a prayer life.  The Bible says it is by prayer, supplication, and thanksgiving that we make our request known to God (Philippians 4:6).  When you pray, aim to be targeted and specific.  Targeted and specific prayers produces great supernatural results.

Be Willing to Defy Logic

After you have prayed, listen to the still small voice in your heart (Kings 19:12) and take action.  After Peter asked Jesus to bid him to come, Jesus replied, “come.”   Action on your part does not end with a prayer.  Oftentimes, God requires that you are an active participant in your miracles, blessings, and destiny.  Notice after Peter communicates with Jesus, Jesus puts the ball back in Peter’s court.  It was up to Peter to activate his faith, defy all logical, and walk on water towards Jesus.

Keep Your Eyes on Jesus

To keep focused on Jesus and do the impossible, you must eliminate distractions.  Back in Jesus’ day, they did not have iPhones, iPads, social media and all the various things that easily distracts us today.  Alert: please do not go and trash your devices and delete your social media accounts. LoL.  I am not telling you to do that.  What I am saying is that we can not focus fully on two things at once.  When you are believing God to manifest the impossible in your life, retreat from the distractions in effort to keep focused on God.
In the scenario with Peter, he did not have control of the wind.  However, he did have control over whether or not he would allow doubt to overtake his faith.  It is why Jesus asked, “O thou of little faith, [why did you] doubt?” (Matthew 14:31).
This segues into another point.  Feed your faith continuously by reading God’s word.  When I read God’s word, specifically the New Testament, my faith is reenergized.  It is like someone popped in a new pair of AA batteries.  God’s word will feed and restore your faith.  We know without faith, we can not please God (Hebrews 11:6).  God is moved by our faith.  It is your faith that makes the impossible, possible.

Doing the Impossible with God and Keeping Focused: Final Words

It is easy to be distracted by fear, doubt, and the elements of life.  However, I want to encourage you today to stay focused.  Whatever it is God has bid you to do, stay focused on God, not your circumstances, and watch God do miraculous things.
Understand that just because God bids you to come does not mean you will not sink. You will sink!  However, just as Jesus was with Peter, Jesus is with you.  He will extend his hand towards you and lift you up when you fall.  Keep moving! Keep pressing! Keep focused!
The word of God says you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you (Philippians 4:13).  God gave you supernatural strength so you can handle the work and call on your life.  You have a future, a destiny, and a purpose!  You must get there even if you have to walk on water on get there.  May this word encourage you in Jesus name!  God bless you!
