“That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing? Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?” (Matthew 6:25-27, NLT).
Do Not Worry: God Will Supply Your Needs
God is a way-maker. He is our great provider. When we do not have a way to pay a bill or to provide for ourselves, God is always a step ahead of us creating a way. In my twenty-something years of living, I have gone through enough to know that God will create something from nothing in order to establish and manifest His glory in our lives.
I was homeless a few years ago. I was unsure of how I would take care of myself because I was unemployed with zero Naira to my name. There were plenty of times when I cried and even became angry with God. The weight of purpose was upon me. I understood that although I could not see it then, there was hope on the other side of the struggle.
I lived in an uncompleted building when I couldn’t afford rent. Week after week, all while being unemployed, God created a way for me to remain off the streets. For as long as I live, I will always share this story with others because it is my testimony. I literally watched God make a way for my family and me, even when we thought none was possible.
During this time, I have come to know God as Jehovah-Jireh, my provider. I relied on Him for food, shelter, and little things such as deodorant, clothes, socks, shoes, toothpaste, and a toothbrush. When you have nothing, you literally depend on God for everything!
I remember traveling by foot from city to city, going business to business filling out job applications for employment. It seemed as if I heard no a thousand times before I received one yes. I was depressed and unhappy. I thought, “God how could you leave me and my family this way?” Little did I know of the glory and the testimony that would come from that experience.
I will admit, I started this article prepared to write about one thing. I guess God wanted me to share this with you instead.
Do Not Worry About Your Life: Trust God
I do not know what you are going through or facing. Maybe you are not homeless. Maybe all your bills are taken care of. While I am in a totally different but better place now, I still have come to rely on God for little things such as peace of mind, sanity, protection against seen and unseen danger, and reconciliation with family members, just to name a few things. I am now trusting God to help me and guide me as I earn my Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Do you see a pattern here? I have started to trust God for everything, just in a different way now.
What are some life essential things that you lack and are believing God for? Jesus said, “Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are?” (Matthew 6:26). Indeed you are! Just as God supplies for the birds and supplied manna and quail from the sky to feed the children of Israel, God will set provision ahead of you to take care of you.
Silence Out Voice of Worry with Faith
In closing, I want you to silence the voice of worry by using words of faith. I covered this in my article, “Having Radical Faith.” This is what helped me when I was homeless and unemployed, and it is what helps me today now that I am employed and working towards my dream of becoming a therapist. I want to leave you with the following quote:
It benefits you no good bit to worry. Do what you are humanly able to do. Leave the rest to God. – Naquan Williams
